Welcome to B204

Mr. Mascherino

Welcome to your child’s third grade class! My name is Mr. Mascherino and this is my second year teaching third grade in Orange House. I am excited to be a part of your child’s educational experience and I am glad to have your child in my class. I’m looking forward to a great school year ahead! Your support at home will certainly help your child and our class to have a very successful year.

Responsibility:

"We need to teach the next generation of children from day one that they are responsible for their lives."

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

Thank you all for such a great year.  It was a pleasure teaching all of you.  I wish you the best of luck in the future.

All students will receive an agenda book which we will use everyday.  Students are responsible for writing their homework in the morning for that particular day.  I will sign the agenda book everyday, and would like the parents to sign the book each night as well.  This is a great way to keep the line of communication open between school and home.  Feel free to write a note to me in the agenda book.

We will have similar homework assignments everyday and they generally will look like the following:

Reading: Students will be required to read at least 15 minutes of a book of their choice.   They must then write a detailed response in their reading journal.  The response should include: the name of the book and the date.  The responses should be in complete sentences with capitals at the beginning of the sentence and the correct punctuation at the end.

  • Reading response starter suggestions:
    • Visualize:  What is happening in the story? Describe it using vivid details.
    • Anticipate and predict.  What do you think will happen next?
    • I like this part of the book because...
    • I can relate to the plot of the story because...
    • I can relate to the character in the story because...

  • Math:
    • MAD MINUTE : A two minute timed Fact Sheet will be due every Friday.  Students will be given a packet with several weeks worth of fact sheets, they need to practice the math facts on the page and be timed for two minutes.  Ideally, we would like students to be able to answer 40 facts in the two minute time period.
    • Math Worksheet:  A math worksheet is typically given to reinforce the day's lesson.  This will be checked the following morning, and gone over in the beginning of the math period.
    • START TODAY: practice your math facts: including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  Flash cards are a good way to practice.

  • Spelling:
    • We will generally have different spelling activities each night.  We will always have a test on the last day of the week, typically Friday.
    • Please do a pretest on Thursday night to practice for the test on Friday.  Please have a parent or guardian sign the pretest.
